Slacking Off May Pay Off For The Moment, But Not In The End

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was talking about my final “special” exam for the third term, on one of the last days of the finals week.

During the previous day, in fact, one of the upperclassmen (who had delayed taking the subject from two years ago – or had failed back then; I didn’t ask) was so desperate for another chance at bolstering his grades even though it was already the last stretch of the term and he could not possibly make up for all the requirements he had not performed adequately on all throughout the term, that he called me up in the office to ask about whether or not he could take the removal, on the day itself that I told him when he asked when I would be posting the names of those who would be taking the removals.

I informed him that he did not make the cut-off, and fortunately he accepted it and did not press, but maybe that was because it was his phone credits that were being used up.

Now back to Mr. Ephraim who I suspect just happened to be in the faculty room when one student was there who would take the removals.

I knew he would have wanted to take the removal just on the off chance that the results of his not-so-excellent final exam was not enough for him to pass, but as usually is the case with him, it is a case of a little effort being a little too late.

Now if only he has shown that kind of initiative during the first thirteen weeks of the term, instead of during the last week, where it came across as (and probably was fueled by) desperation, then maybe I would have been inclined to give him another chance at getting a passing grade.

And that’s it. Only those who have shown good performance during the earlier part of the term, but for some reason (maybe also because of the difficulty of the subject, especially if it’s a lecture class) get low scores, who will get considerations from me. Or even those who showed effort during the latter part of the term, but not those who have consistently low all throughout the term then suddenly want to make up for it in one day or even one week, even if it is finals week.

Discipline of consistent performance is what I want to instill.

Session 1091 ended the call. Class dismissed.
