Giving the Students A Tastes of the Work Life

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was talking about some of the practicum or on-the-job training students last time.

Since the course I took in college did not have anything like this – which maybe should have portended to everyone the size of the job market for my degree - this is the first time I’m encountering some of the procedures involved with that.

For one thing, even though the students are not in the campus for at least five days of the week, they still have to pay from one to twelve units tuition to the school, depending on the circumstances around the “job” they have decided to take.

They also still have to pay insurance, residency fees, computer fees, library fees and such, because there are still times when they can avail of the facilities of the school during the term, either on Saturdays, evenings or when they decide not to show up for the day at the company that took them on.

It was probably not emphasized to the students how taking on an internship at an outside company is like a marriage; there is a certain amount of commitment involved.

If they decide to quit after a week or so, what does that reflect on their possible attitude when they graduate?

The school though, just bursting with projects to be implemented with no one to hand them off to, have allowed for students to have their practicum in campus, working on one big task.

There have now been a handful of cases of students deciding to leave the company they applied in to work in school and vice versa.

For those in the former category, it is good to note that the reason has been that the company has not given them anything challenging instead of the work being too demanding for the students.

For those who go out of campus, they want to experience different environments other than taking (more) orders from their professors. Maybe we could let them try both next time this is offered.

Session 1123 was unfairly given menial labor in her OJT. Class dismissed.
