Student Performance Concerns and Apathy

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

For the meeting of my Electric Circuits One Laboratory class for the second week of the first term, I asked the students to group themselves and give me their names when they had all showed up.

I waited for them in the technician's room.

This, after all, is the same class of third year engineering irregulars I talked about recently. So I was not surprised that even though they set an 8am class, that a lot of them would not be showing up on time for that. This time my expectation (and finding out I was right) got ahead of my irritation.

I could have also taken all their schedules and found out a convenient new time for all of us, but that required waiting for all of them to pass their enrollment forms to me, which I could spend weeks waiting for again. This way, they set the new time, and if they don't like it, they can't complain because they decided on it, and I just accepted it.

The first week, by the way, was spent with only half of the students attending because the other half was in their other conflicted class, which was why they are asking to move it in the first place.

The third meeting of my Mathematical Methods class for the second week was the recitation and board work review for the quiz as I had promised them.

Despite the fact that this is the just a review of most of the mathematics they had taken up in their lower years, and that I started with the easiest topic, there were still some apprehensions when I called the names of the first ones to answer on the board. I guess it's springs from being similar to the common fear of speaking in public - or the anxiety of standing in front of the board for a long time not being able to answer anything while everyone else watches.

There has to be more support from the classmates to overcome that.

Session 1149 just stood there. Class dismissed.
