Foresight and Efficiency of Engineering Students, or How They Should Be

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the meeting of the second section of my Engineering Computer Aided Design and Drawing class for the third week of the first term, I gave them the same questions about the two softwares (one of which they have used three terms prior, and the other hopefully that we will use as soon as it has been installed by the technician in the computer lab, for which I've been stalling for the past two weeks) as the other class that had to be answered by searching through review and promotional sites on the net.

It was only at this time though, that I realized that the division of the two classes for the sectioning is between ECE majors and Computer Engineering majors, this group being composed of the second.

Also, since they had been complaining since I entered the room about how surfing was slow, they were talking loudly about using just one browser to search (and conserve the bandwidth).

Of course that would defeat the intended purpose of the whole exercise, which is for each of them to learn how to use proper keywords in searching, preferably by trial and error.

But somehow I got the feeling that they wanted me to react adversely to what they were doing, which was why I just pretended not to hear.

They also kept mentioning that the technician said the connection would be intermittent twenty minutes into our class because of some maintenance going on (so they thought they could finish and be dismissed early), but in fact the loading of pages became faster until the second hour of our three-hour class.

It was also in this class that I found out there was one student who, having failed Graphics One a year before and not taken up Graphics Two, this time around he did not enroll in GRAFIX1, even though the content of the two classes, as I most likely have mentioned here before, have been switched.

So we teased him that he now faces the prospect of taking up the subject with the freshmen when he is already a third year student.

I wonder if the case is the same with the other current second year engineering students who also failed GRAFIX1, but I forgot to ask them when they went for academic advising last term.

Session 1163 failed Graphics One. Class dismissed.
