Not Telling The Students When They've Worked Enough

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Just adding something "not for all eyes" to my topic in today's "for all eyes - including the students" online journal post.

I have also thought of giving the grading system to the students from the start of the classes, and the weight of each requirement (such as exams and assignments). The problem that I saw with this is that the students who are determined to put in just the mininum amount of effort would only either strive to pass the heavy weighted requirements, and tend to dismiss or ignore what they would consider as the "small potatoes" not being worth their time and attention to take away from their online games and dance parties.

Besides, if the student did start out putting up maximum effort under that system, there is going to be the tendency to start slacking off as soon as they realize that they already have enough points to get a passing grade in the subject.

So I prefer to keep the actual grade breakdown secret until the end of the term, just giving them the class standing based on all the requirements submitted so far when ti comes to midterms. Up to now, that has worked for me in the subjects I teach.

During the time of the meeting of my second Engineering Computer Aided Drawing and Design class for the first term, I could not meet them because of a promotions board convening.

So I just gave the same assignment as from the first class through the college secretary, and told them to submit it to my e-mail address at the end of the period, since I also did not have time to check their diskettes; the meeting started an hour earlier than I expected.

Unfortunately there was also a mix up with a 3D animation class using the same lab at the same time, which before had used one of the Integrated School labs when they still did not have classes.

So the exercises had to be made into assignments due in the middle of next week, when they would have time to use the computer lab during their vacant periods, or during the other class.

Darn, I was hoping to bring up some of the points raised during the meeting with the Executive Vice President, but I'm out of space and time, so they will have to wait until the next entry.

Session 1171 doesn't know the grade breakdown. Class dismissed.
