Are Exams Better Scheduled From the Start of the Term?

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the first session of my Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism lecture class for the sixth week of the first term, I rounded out the second chapter on electric fields, giving just three points that had not been brought up before, then I reminded them about their exam in the next meeting, which some people were surprised with given we had two holidays in the previous weeks.

But I said we would have the exam every third week regardless of the amount of material covered, so as to be ahead of the scheduling from their other subjects, probably setting exams at the last minute, as was my old habit in my other lecture classes.

I also gave them five practice problems, but instead of having them solved individually (which would defeat the purpose of the practice, since I knew a lot of them were not ready) or on the board, I just told them to form their groups in the lab and try to answer them all together, to be submitted at the end of the period. They could then delegate work and try to study each other's solutions afterwards.

One student had both of his groupmates absent, so he was just absorbed by another group with three members. Same with another student who had already passed the lab before the grades were unified.

In the lab class immediately afterwards, they had their first experiment, Ohm's Law.

Only one student was too late to take the quiz. And those who were present thought I was going to ask for the materials, which was all they were trying to recount - aloud, at that.

Another student didn't show up at all, despite being in the lecture class beforehand.

I saw him at the east gate after the class, and after seeing an uncomprehending blank look on his face, he realized belatedly that he forgot all about the class. I doubted he was acting.

Session 1189 will make up the experiment. Class dismissed.
