Making Full Use of the Engineering Laboratory Time

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the meeting for the ninth week of classes for the second section of my Introduction to Electricity and Magnetism class, we had two experiments.

This is to make up for the class suspension the week before, so as not to have to schedule a three-hour session some other time of the week.

The first experiment was Electromotive Force, Terminal Voltage and Internal Resistance, and the second one was about the multi-voltage source loop and node rules for computing the various currents.

I also indicated that we would have the quiz on the first of the two experiments during the first ten minutes of the session, and the second during the second ten minutes of the class. For those who submitted their first quizzes early, they were then allowed to step out, bring their manuals and study for the next one before the ten minutes are up.

We used batteries that could be recharged for the EMF experiment, and it somehow played havoc with the analog meters we were using, registering a certain peak value then slowly decreasing while the students were still holding the circuit closed, alligator clips to the battery terminals.

I also had them make two trials, one for one of the two batteries they were given, and the second using both batteries. In retrospect, I wonder if they could have used the second battery alone for the second trial as well.

They were also registering either very large or very small voltages and currents, prompting us to switch meters to get more accurate readings.

The same was true with the variable resistors we were using, which had to be replaced in the middle of the experiment to reach the needed current values.

So the first experiment of the day still took more than the first half of the period, before we moved on to the next one, for which I also had to give a short lecture at the start, and only to choice representatives per group.

Session 1221 has concept overload. Class dismissed.
