So Much For Teaching The Students Responsibility

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Before I start talking about the classes for the tenth week of the first term, I would like to sound out about the faculty academic advisers’ meeting that we had on the second to the last day of the ninth week.

It was here that the Director of the School of Engineering, who for a fact I know has been teaching for less than half of the time I have, and was only accepted because of his seniority credentials, suggested that we move the last day of dropping from the fourth week of classes to the eighth week, the week after midterm exams are given.

He said that this would allow the students to determine accurately whether they should continue with a subject and have it appear in their transcript, when they’ve seen the results of their efforts up to that point of the term.

The Director of the School of Business (again someone who from his own admission two years ago has been teaching for less time than I have) agreed with this proposition, saying that the teacher should then not give the student any advice when they are asked if the student has what it takes to pass the course or if they should stop.

He talked about how the students are old enough to make their own decisions. I don’t think he believes that though, because later on when we were talking about foreign students being obligated to take the Filipino for Non-Filipinos course, he played devil’s advocate (hiding behind the words “just curious”) saying what if the student insisted on taking the regular Conversational Filipino course. In my own experience, ultimately the student if he fails will find himself blameless and put all fault in the teacher who failed him, regardless of the fairness of the situation.

They didn’t even answer our concern about the students abusing the policy by making minimum effort until the eighth week, and then just drop if they realize they are going to fail. They kept concentrating on the marginal example of a student vying for honors not being awarded because of one teacher that failed them or gave them a low grade.

Hopefully the whole notion gets vetoed at the directors’ meeting.

Session 1225 didn’t drop but stopped working after the eighth week anyway. Class dismissed.
