The Point Where The Teacher Stops Being Friend and Starts Being the "Enemy"

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was talking about Deiv asking for help with his final exam in Engineering Materials Science.

I said I could not give him the formula he was asking for because it was a question in the identification and enumeration part of one of the other sets.

He replied that since it was not asked in the set he was answering, I could give it to him.

That, amongst all of the other times he's crossed the line, was the latest one.

I replied that I would therefore score his paper based on what he had answered based on his knowledge. If I gave him the formula he was asking, it would be the same as giving him free points. That cut him off.

After all, why ask the teacher for help on exam day when it's the same person who will be grading what you know and how you answer?

Even if the teacher answers their questions, I would still remember who had to ask for assistance in answering that item, and deduct points accordingly.

In another instance, when the question from another student wasn't so basic but just verifying a step in the procedure they weren't sure of, I gave them the scenario what if they were already working, and high up in some transmission tower somewhere – somewhat still aimed at Deiv.

If they weren't sure of how to proceed with fixing the problem would they still call me up?

Would they call their boss, who would pay them (or not pay them) according to their proficiency the same way a teacher pays them – with grades?

I ended up with the admonition that sooner or later they have to get to the point where they have to make a decision based on what they know or remember.

Session 1273 wants the teacher to meet them more than halfway. Class dismissed.
