Analyzing the Cause and Effect on Machines

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I was talking about the meeting of my Integrated Computer Systems lab class for the fifth week of the second term. We went through all of the steps of troubleshooting, comparing the program that worked with the program that didn't work to see if there were any slight but significant differences, such as using subroutine names that were tied in with a specific action.

One thing I did notice was that for the program that worked, every other button click would clear the seven segment display.

My conclusion then was that only the even numbers were being processed, so that if we modified the program to increment by two instead of by one, they it would eliminate the extra clear step.

Instead what happened was that none of the lights would work.

Conclusion: it's the odd numbers entered that make the lights work, and their program only used even numbers. The fact that the number eight has to be displayed by entering the number 255 (eight one's in binary) was a dead giveaway, and they didn't use that in their program, instead there was 254.

Now they could move on to that game show or quiz contest speed buzzer project slash experiment which is an edict from the Executive Vice President.

In the Intermediate Robotics two-hour session for the week, I gave them the specifics of their next project, which is not the five by five dot drawer anymore, but the coordinating or cooperating robots I gave them in their first exam.

Again this was a suggestion from on high as to what the Integrated School students, particularly the lower levels, would be interested in watching, and robots passing along a package is just that.

I also gave them the grades for the first project, along with the breakdown, which did not elicit any questions from a certain student, except about not ranking his group mates, for which he did not follow the instructions, or know the difference between ranking from one to four and rating from one to four.

Session 1353 wanted to rank the others all the same. Class dismissed.
