Going Forward, Going Backwards, Going Sideways and Standing Still

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

In the second meeting of my Computer Circuit Fundamentals lecture class for the seventh week of the second term, I gave them two new exercises after our discussion of how to save strings the previous meeting, the first of which was still to accept a string, then display a hello message with the name in the string entered.

What surprised me with the students was that they used the read a string procedure from the sample as is, without deleting any of superfluous (for the second program)code from the first program.

That gave me the clue that the students really didn't understand the new commands used to be able to save characters in a string, because they didn't know what were the only essential commands they needed, knowing just in general what the procedure was that accomplished everything to be done.

So I had to tell them that a higher grade would be given to the group that will pass a streamlined program, even if all programs work.

In other news, the college faculty retreat is scheduled for November.

Originally there was only going to be one schedule, but for some reason, the option was floated to have two sessions on two weekends.

And not that the college faculty had ever given any reason for the administration to suspect factions (which are prevalent and affecting productivity in the Integrated School) but the decision of who will join the first batch and who will join the second batch was brought down to lot-drawing.

There were already some faculty members who tried to influence the lots by drawing more than once, and others who have tried to trade places with someone from the other batch.

Now, I don't know if that was the reason or not, but in the end it was decided to have just one retreat for all the faculty again.

Maybe it was just a social experiment set up by the administration to see how the faculty will react, and I don't know if we passed or failed.

Session 1373 just copied and pasted everything. Class dismissed.
