Concerned About Student Survival in the Real World

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Because a certain student is in my Basic Electronics Lab class, I’m thinking of just shuffling the groupings for each experiment. I could tell the students that when they do get a job, they will be assigned to work with different people and they will have to be able to work well with all of them, otherwise they will not fit in with the company, leading either to no promotions or even getting fired sometime.

This is definitely something that a certain student has to learn, because he cannot always think of everything as being grade related.

On a side note, this is also so that all the students in that class will get the chance of NOT having them in their group, instead of letting just a few people suffer that misfortune for the next thirteen weeks of the term.

I will also be striving to not talk about the Interactive Science projects in his presence, so that he will not try to submit one again. I’m also going to have to consult with my co-teacher who has taught these kinds of subjects before about the project that he requires the students.

I have a suspicion that if this student is assigned a project, he will just show up in school one day with his project all assembled already even though he had not been seen working on it in the lab anytime.

In the first lecture of my general science requirement mechanics class for the term, which is the first time I’ve taught the subject in almost two years, I talked about conversion of primary quantities (length, mass and time) told them I was impressed that no one mentioned any units, and that someone determined what made up the secondary quantities.

I also reviewed them on scientific notation and, connected with that, metric prefixes. I was surprised to see that only half of the period had been consumed at that point, but I didn’t want to start on the next topic (acceleration) already, so I just gave them a four-item exercise. Some students, I wasn’t surprised to see, did not bring exercise notebooks, so I gave bonuses to those that did bring.

Session 1477 will let his parents do all the work when he gets a job. Class dismissed.
