If At First You Don't Succeed, Find Another Route

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Before the term started, I had a dream one night about a certain student being disheartened with his studies because of his most recent failure and low grades that he lacked the fervor he previously displayed with respect to his studies.

I don't know whether it's just the subject matters I'm teaching, but this seems to be coming true. Not only does he come to class in my lecture subject late (something that usually never happens, although maybe it's the fault of his teacher in the earlier subject) but he doesn't get to sit front and center anymore because of that, and he's relegated to sitting in the front left, then move to the front right when he can't read what's on the board (it is, after all, a noon class, and the light from the windows are at their brightest).

Besides that, he's only questioning now about the transitions from one equation to the other, and usually just about the change of sign, never about the integral calculus that was used.

This, plus the fact that despite my talking about the exercises he always has to approach me afterwards asking what they are supposed to do (that I can also dismiss to his just concentrating on copying what's written on the board instead of what I'm lecturing) seems to me that he cannot follow now as well as he did my previous lecture classes.

Maybe he's also distracted by the view of the Integrated School building, which is why I usually see him looking out the window when not copying something, or even when the exercise has started.

Another indicator is that his exercises all get less than half the maximum points.

I don't know if it's related but in the lab class, (Basic Electronics), he also just sits to one side watching instead of leading.

Session 1489 knows the old tricks in class don't work anymore. Class dismissed.
