Preventing The Students From Requesting Anything That Comes to Mind

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

There were some other concerns that came up in our School of Engineering meeting last week, such as the need for a water dispenser and a printer in the new faculty room, since these have not been confirmed yet.

There might also be a need for extra computer monitors, keyboards and mice for the computers to be allocated for the faculty (two more for each), so that effectively there would be one terminal per fulltime faculty. This, again, will be proposed at the council of directors meeting for approval of the dean and EVP.

I brought up setting up a formal form (is the noun derived from the verb?) so that students don’t just approach the dean anymore for change of class schedules when they find a conflict, without consulting the teacher or the rest of their classmates, since such overrides in the past have resulted in yet more overlapping times. It also takes care of the waivers from all of the students enrolled in that class that the registrar wants whenever the teacher passes a letter for such a permanent change until the end of the term.

And, apparently, it is an experience that almost all the Engineering faculty have gone through, because it is the students after all that seem to get the encouragement from their peers to do the same thing, after one relates his experience.

Just take the flowchart prerequisite waiver for one. At the start of this term alone, we got two letters of such from irregular juniors, the second passing his letter even though the first one was declined. If these students see an opportunity for an easier life without following some set rules, they take it.

The students hopes were also probably buoyed by the fact that the dean (and the EVP) did not deny it outright, but passed it to the director. I think the students believed the two higher ranking administrators would accept the director’s word if the request was approved, instead of the dean and EVP just following the proper channels that the student should have written the director first.

At the meeting we did already set the minimum requirements for approval of such waiver, such as the total number of units left and the students’ grade point average.

Like in the first letter, the student pointed out that his GPA did in fact go up in the last term, despite the fact that he still failed the subject he is requesting to take again at the same time as its post-requisite. Talk about seeing the very thin (and maybe not relevant) silver lining in a very dark storm cloud.

Session 1529 thinks it doesn’t hurt to ask the teachers again and again for leeway. Class dismissed.
