No Use Going Higher Up the Ladder - of Allies

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Well, the executive vice president has spoken. In the 'case' of the two senior students who failed (not for the first time) in their last mathematics subject (even though they are business majors) who appealed to the E. V. P. because they said they have been attending classes but they still failed the course, the administration has sided with the teacher, citing – of all things, academic freedom.

To the teacher herself, the students have been pleading that it would not be unfair to their classmates to give them a special exam even though they did not reach the cut off for the removals the teacher gives, because they are “graduating”.

Unlike their classmates, they said, who are third year students and below, they don't have the luxury of time to stay in school any longer and repeat the course.

In other words, they believe they should be given special consideration just because they have been in school the longest, when in fact they are the ones who should be giving special consideration to these their last subjects because they want to leave already.

In the time line of these students' activity cycle, where they are slacking off for most of the term then they want to make up for it by studying “seriously” for the one or two tests they have at the end of the term, then, if they consider themselves to have been slacking off for most of their stay here in the college, this should be the term when they are giving more effort that they usually do (which, admittedly, is still not enough) to ensure finishing.

By choosing to go the “academic freedom” route, the administration has opted not to have to review the details of the case and whether or not the students have a valid grievance, such as the students' class records on exams and attendance.

The students themselves probably knew that if their own grades were about ten percent or less below the passing, and the teacher's records show that they have been attending for all this time, then it might have worked out in their favor.

But that is not the case. Their exam papers should have reflected their effort, but still not being able to answer the very basic questions in integral calculus, it's not difficult to fail them.

Maybe, just maybe, they will learn for the next term, whether or not they have the same teacher in that subject or not. Teachers will still talk to each other about their best and worst students for the term, after all. Especially since I'm ensuring that by making it one of the topics in our workshop later today.

Session 1595 wears 'graduating' like a badge for the handicapped. Class dismissed.
