Shades of Gray Grades

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Some meta-student concerns from the last three major events that happened academic wise.

First of all, there were questions raised about the integrity of one of the awarded graduates.

This is a student who, not because of desperation to pass but desperation to get honors, used a cheat sheet in the exams of one of her major subjects.

The teacher discovered the paper and automatically assumed that it belonged to the only other student in the room, who is a consistent underachiever.

The teacher asked said scholar if the paper belonged to the underachiever.

Instead of telling the truth, the scholar said yes, it belonged to the underachiever.

Now, the two students have patched things up because the scholar apologized, and apparently admitted to the teacher about her transgression.

The teacher didn’t sanction her though, and since the underachiever also passed, he also didn’t file a formal complaint. Instead, the story went around the students as to how disgusting the behavior of the scholar really is.

All of which is too bad, because now there can never be an official inquiry into the business.

And if the scholar does get a job outside, her employer will see that her output does reflect her grades.

In such a case as this, is there any conscience left to work at all among the people concerned?

Some of the people who heard about the incident called that there should be strict rules on the discovery of cheating, that it should always be reported and immediately documented, no more “I’ll let you off with a warning this time” just because the student otherwise has a perfect scholastic record.

The question is though, will the teacher always report these discovered incidents? And is it correct that some people will also consider that cheating as well?

Session 1613 believes that there are points awarded for honesty. Class dismissed.
