Scrambling to Fill the Gaps

Unexpected Voids

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

One faculty of the school of engineering requested to be released from her one year contract with the school, after only teaching for one term.

During that term, all that she did was teach or stay in her cubicle, which, ironically enough, was located nearest to the entrance of the faculty area.

She never once went with any of us to have lunch or even to the seminars like meeting the new brother president. She didn't even hang out with her close friend from her former school who recommended her here.

One time when she was invited to lunch by some of the girls among the faculty and she declined the offer, she replied to a comment about working too much, “That's what one is supposed to do in the office, work!”

She didn't even join in the off-campus faculty workshop, which had a corresponding penalty to be paid by salary deduction since it is technically required.

As I think I have mentioned here before on a similar case, it is difficult to force a teacher to continue working to the letter of the signed contract even though they are not happy anymore with their position, because in the end, it is the students and the reputation of the school that will suffer.

Because of this, in the past three days, I have had to attend two new teaching demonstration panels for engineering teachers, one of which is recommended by the leaving faculty (who, by the way, cited family health problems as her reason), but who just gave birth in the end of April.

According to the law, the new applicant is supposed to be given a two month maternity leave.

If she starts to teach next week before her first month is even up, and even with her willingness, would that be considered illegal? That is an issue that the acting dean would rather not go into, so she'd rather not hire the new girl full time.

Besides, it's her second child, and the first child is just a year old. There is a huge possibility that the young mother would be asking for make up sessions a lot to take care of her children, which would again have the students and the school's reputation at the losing end of the bargain.

Session 1627 doesn't want to be forced to work against their will. Class dismissed.
