Students Only Physically Present for the Grade, But Mentally Checked Out

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Minor landmark achieved today, breaking one thousand and seven hundred posts in both online journals in four years, six months and eight days.

In my last Energy Conversion lecture class, I finished talking about resonance in series, giving them the graphs for the voltage through the various components.

Then the characteristics of the graph were discussed, including where the curve shows the rate of increase is large or small compared to that of another quantity.

Basically, this just means there are parts of the graph when it is more horizontal and times when it is more vertical, before it peaks and afterwards.

That means we start talking about resonance in parallel for our next meeting.

Talking about some special cases for the resonance circuit (when the quality factor is greater than ten) I used one side of the board for side equations.

When it came to the exercise though, the students relied on all of the equations that were written on the board, including the ones that I said were under special conditions.

And since they weren’t listening during the lecture part of the session, they didn’t get the right answers.

@@ In the lab session, the students had to continue their preparation of their project for the foundation day exhibit, where I asked them to complete the design of all the posters they had to have on their demonstration table for the event.

The first was the big blurb, such as “We Dare You to Drink Battery Fluid” for the Gatorade voltage source.

The second poster is for simple instructions that the young students could follow, since most of the exhibits have to be hands-on and should require minimum interference from the facilitators present, who are just there for safety of both students and equipment.

The last poster has to contain the explanation of how the phenomenon shown works in easy-to-understand words and provide illustrations that will hopefully entice them to take up engineering courses when they graduate from high school.

Session 1701 is in class only for attendance and the exercise, not the lecture. Class dismissed.
