New and Old Behavior from Teachers and Students

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Yesterday during our hiring board meeting (for the approval two part-time faculty) it was mentioned how they had first applied for a full-time position, then returned and said they would accept a part-time one.

This is separately, not talking to each other. I also don't know if it's the charm of the school itself that made them accept or maybe they weren't getting more attractive offers from the other nearby educational institutions that have cropped up - and are supposed to be also hiring new and more teachers.

@@ There was an e-mail in the faculty's mailing list about benefits for the children of the teachers who are married. Not surprisingly, the first to reply to this was my slacker co-teacher.

That's the only time he's not slacking, when it comes to the benefits from the administration that he wants, or for complaining about some of the work policies that make his life difficult.

But when it comes to arranging for his class' field trips, he leaves that to the students, even though he himself admits that during their own field trips when he was a student he just showed up and rode the bus and walked with his classmates.

Is this really the picture of responsibility he wants the students to emulate?

@@ For my Computer Systems Organization special class, I had to split the students into two teams that will meet on different days in the lab because of their lack of a common three-hour block.

That's four students per class, which I may just put into one group each.

If this were a regular class made up of engineering majors, I would force them to have two groups of two members each, for maximum learning.

@@ Speaking of which, the Intermediate Robotics lab class I talked about before that only has two groups will now definitely have to be split into three, with the addition of one more student to their fold.

I hope they don't complain about it anymore, and are willing to buy the additional minimal cost equipment for their exercises, because that's the only way they will learn more efficiently.

Session 1821 is content to sit in the sidelines and let the rest of the group finish the circuit and pass the class. Class dismissed.
