First Speed Bumps of the Term

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

I don't know if I've mentioned here about my new class policy of submitting exam booklets at the start of the term instead of one for each test we have.

After all, I got this from the math teachers who ask for reams of paper from their students for their specialized stapled booklets.

My first exam in robotics lecture was yesterday. It was supposed to be designed for only one hour, and it had twenty items of enumeration/objective and three programming questions.

The first question was just to get the Boolean expression for hiring someone based on a combination of four qualifications.

The second was to make the LEDs connected to the parallel port light up in a certain sequence, primarily just an exercise in conversion from binary to decimal or hexadecimal.

The third question was to get one bit in the middle of the status byte.

This they could do by continuous division by two, until they isolate the value.

Afterwards what they had to do was output a certain bit in the control byte or the date byte, depending on the value of the checked bit.

I also had the students seated in alphabetical order, which was somewhat regrettable because even two seats away some of the old "cheat" mates were still talking to each other. Good thing that in this class their lab output is paramount, and not the lecture scores.

For the Assembly language first exam earlier, it seems that they did not write down (or deduce) how to split a sixteen-bit register into its two eight-bit values, even though I gave them the one for translating two eight-bits to its sixteen-bit equivalent.

Also, they could have done the long method, which is to convert it first to binary then split to two eight bits then reverted to decimal.

But I was content that a larger percentage than last term's takers were able to get the correct execution tables to the code I gave them to analyze.

Session 1837 still doesn't listen to the lectures, and only studies the concepts when asked to answer something. Class dismissed.
