Students Smell It If The Teacher Is Afraid

Student "edition" found at {csi dot journalspace dot com}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

Last Monday the associate dean sent an e-mail to me and my two co-teachers who are supposed to take over for two of my classes.

One of them (the one who is not slacker co-teacher) was my student before in that same subject, Computer Systems Organization Lab.

Last Monday she already told me she received the e-mail, and called me in the Engineering faculty room about what to teach, and I waited for her to show up.

She didn't. When I was looking for her yesterday, I was told that she didn't go to work.

I also sent her a text message yesterday, but when she didn't reply, I assumed she didn't receive it and sent another text last night.

Today at 8am, just when I'm getting ready to go out of the house (and the time when the class I had to let go was supposed to begin) she sends me a text message saying she doesn't know what to do.

Well, not really in those words. She said she didn't know wat exercise to give them, knowing that I gave an exercise at the start of each class.

Since the topics are Simplification of Boolean Functions and Combinational Logic, I told her the exercise could be on the same function that is given for the experiment. So I was suprised when her next text was asking about adders and subtractors, which are way advanced topics, towards the end of the term.

So I had to lay down a very specific text saying that she is to get the Digital Design book, go to the last chapter which is the lab experiments, look for the part on boolean functions, and get the expressions to be simplified from there.

And even though the night before I told her I would be in school halfway through her class if she had any questions, I didn't go to the lab room, but instead stayed in the college faculty room until her class ended and my next one began, and I had cooled down.

As the Nintendo game "Brain Age" says, getting angry at the drop of a hat can be a warning sign of decreasing brain function.

Session 1857 may have panicked teaching a class for only the second time, and the first time with students who are her batch mates. Class dismissed.
