A Peek Behind the Curtain at the Top of the Pyramid

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

So yesterday I was in the extended operations council meeting all day and off campus.

It was funny that in the first part of the discussion, I was teamed up with two people who already knew what I was going to be saying as the biggest moment of my scholastic life last year.

This is, of course, having to go to the commission on higher education with a lawyer.

Besides that, I told them about not expect that kind of resistance I got from a quarter that I thought would be on “our side”, and suspiciously only because of friction from another matter.

I also told about how it had affected my sleep before the end of the term, and that during the term break there would be little reminders that would bring the whole problem back to me, knowing that I will have to deal with it again when school resumes.

Of the other three members of our small group, two were talking about their nearing retirement.

I guess that's why the main theme of the talk of the brother president was on mid life transition.

As for the first part of the afternoon session, our small group decided that it was time for solitude that we would most like to have in school, being able to walk around a section of campus with no interruptions from mobile phones or radios.

One said that he could take this once a week, but some preferred to have this half hour by themselves everyday.

Sadly, for the second part of the afternoon session, where we discussed the top three challenges facing the campus today, this seemed a very trivial concern compared to what the others brought up. Not surprisingly, the worries were all based on their particular office: for me, thinking as a teacher, it was about academics first before it was about student affairs. There was also the question of identity of our students and their emerging culture as opposed to the culture we want them to have. There was also a question of solidarity, expressed by others as factionalism or even more blatantly as in-fighting.

What surprised me was that when the matter became about protecting physical facilities and security of the school in general, even though it was only supposed to be about bringing the points to everyone's attention, there was a defense raised against it.

Session 2531 doesn't think it's about “since the other schools aren't doing it or have the same problems, we should not consider it such a big deal”. Do we really have to wait until something drastic happens before addressing this? Class dismissed.
