Suffer More or No More

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

The free anti-virus software that is installed in the computers here in the engineering faculty room is no longer updated, and every time we turn on the computers we get reminded of the fact by a big pop up window. It won't go away for a while until you click on the "remain unprotected" button, because since we don't have administrator privileges, we can't install the new version of the software.

Part of the annoyance is that during meetings of the extended operations council late in the school year a few months ago, it was announced that new anti-virus software would be installed in the computers over the summer break. Obviously that didn't happen.

Thankfully we still have a machine here with the Linux operating system, which I use to be able to delete the files that the viruses automatically run when in Windows.

But it's still annoying when we have to use the Windows machines, since they are the only ones that are connected to the printer. And speaking of which, what the heck is it with our settings not being saved so that every time we print the default is either the document image writer or the printer in the other faculty room all the way on the other side of the building.

Thankfully that link doesn't work anymore (we get an error message every time even though it still shows the connection to that network printer) so we don't waste paper printing double of everything or energy in having to go all the way there just to retrieve our printout.

But why is it still the default setting and why doesn't it save the setting for the printer we do use?

It's bad enough that for our accounts it takes a hell of a long time to load and save the settings, which I know is mostly temporary files anyway. It doesn't help that I've cleaned up my network folder.

@@ The extra table that slacker co-teacher brought over from our corner of the cubicles in the faculty room will now be taken for use by the director of the school of arts and sciences.

I told the director that it was S.C.T. who didn't want to part with it anyway, so it can be let go anytime.

There's also a small rolling cabinet that goes under the desks, of which he took an extra one, which somehow disappeared.

Maybe it was when he was moving out and he gave it to someone else, or maybe it was in the recent inventory and the physical facilities finally took it away from him for someone else to use who has none.

I'm glad that a lot of his excesses are coming to light, although there's that tinge of regret that it's only when he's no longer around to be accountable for them, but at least they realize he's not someone we want to come back here anymore with his abuses.

Session 2675 is slowly but surely building that dream castle known as a good work place. Class dismissed.
