Accepting Their Lot In Life?

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

One of the things that I had to learn first hand when I got my own business was how to handle having the power in my hands to make or break the livelihood of a person. Admittedly I know this is not a high paying position, so in the same way that I do not have the luxury of getting college graduates, for example, I have to settle for lesser qualifications, and so do the applicants.

Given my background as a teacher, and knowing some of their bad habits from the start, I have tried to make them see the long term consequences of some of their bad financial actions, and to save more money.

I have, for instance had employees that got their allowance daily, and then there were those who wanted to save them all until the end of the month, relying on their tips for their daily expenses.

This, I noticed though, made them actually spend more than save more, as at the start of the next month I would see them with new mobile phones or even a big TV, which they would not have been able to afford getting their pay per day. The problem was, in the end, all their money was still gone.

I have tried to involve the workers in the process of seeing our expenses compared to our profits.

I would tell them, and make them see, that all the money coming in must pay for the rental, utilities and supplies first, because that will keep us in business. If there is not enough business, this will have a consequence on the allowances they would receive. I thought they were already familiar with this because one time that there was not enough sales for the day to pay for their allowances, they stayed open two extra hours. But apparently, that is still short sighted thinking.

Maybe it was wrong of me to agree to keep their salaries until the end of the month, because it made them less aware of how much the business was earning per day, and if it would be enough to pay for the expenses of the month.

As it turned out with this practice, simultaneously there was a slight dip in monthly profits. To make up for this I asked them to distribute flyers with their names on it so that there would be an incentive for them if a client arrived with their name marked on the flyers. Sadly, this was still not enough to motivate them to continue to work harder to earn more for me and for them.

Somehow they had gotten complacent with the base amount they were already getting per month.

Besides this I was also already getting reports that they were using the resources and supplies of the business for their own wants, such as watching hours of DVD movies (on the TV set bought) after closing time at night.

It came to a head with someone refusing to perform their daily clean-up duties, quoting the previous manager, also already gone, that they could stop anytime they wanted to, and this was that point.

They could not see that if the clean-up was not done, then the business could not be opened, and thus there would be no sales, therefore, no job. This message, by the way, was relayed to the manager.

I got a call from the worker after this, not to ask for a compromise, but to say that they were leaving, just like that. Well, as my co-teacher and fellow franchisee said good riddance to unappreciative employees with bad attitudes.

Session 2967 sees they do not connect bonuses to their good work. Class dismissed.
