Choosing Roads That Pass The Burden of Decision to Others

Student "edition" found at {thoughts dot com slash typed no space out no space loud slash blog}.

Maybe I shouldn't have started this blog now, not with everything that's been going on.

As promised, here is the gist of the letter that I wrote to the dean two weeks ago, with the approval of the head of human resources who I believe was not talking to me as part of her job but as a mentor.

Dear Ma'am,

I would like to signify my intention to stay on in the Office of Student Affairs for the coming school year, 2010-2011.

I admit that there have been problems throughout this school year, but overall I would attribute them to the adjustment of both myself and the student leaders from relatively lax system that we had before I became full time.

Just like with any obstacles encountered within the term while teaching, I believe the best solution is to orient the students on the first day of the next term to the new policies that will prevent recurrence of the difficulties. In this case, I am already preparing materials for presentation in the leadership camp this coming summer based on what has occurred during this school year.

It is therefore my hope that with this resolve and the support of and coordination with the various administrative offices on consistent implementation, that the coming school year will see student leaders and activities in which we can all be proud, in their accomplishments in campus and when they use these skills in their careers.

End letter. I would have mentioned something about my graduate studies, but she could have asked me about it if she wanted to clarify after having read my letter, which she did not. Instead she passed the buck to the president.

After talking to the president, at the start of which I could already see where the wind was blowing, I wrote the following letter based on the very limited and not so attractive choices he offered me.

Dear Brother,

First of all I would like to thank you for all the trust that you have for me and all the opportunities that you have given me in the past three years here. I will be eternally grateful for all the support I have received in my work endeavors under your leadership.

In line with this I would like to inform you that after careful review of my current options I have decided to make a clean break from working in this campus when my present appointment in the Office of Student Affairs ends.

As I have discussed with you before, since the start of the past year I have for several instances been led to the potential for personal growth, residence and financial stability in [the province to the south] and I now believe that my 7 years here from the main campus in Manila have only been a step in that direction.

I would also like to state that I will be giving you all the possible assistance in assuring a smooth transition of office with my replacement before leaving.

Again, I am glad to know you, the most approachable La Salle brother I have met since starting college in Manila all those years ago, and I am proud to have worked in your administration.

End second letter. I am satisfied with my wording here, not even mentioning the doors that had been closed to me. Will this be the end of this discussion or will the succeeding days (or failing days) be more of the same?

Session 3025 says the changing mood will tell. Class dismissed.
