This newfangled electricity thing

Hi, all. Sorry for the silence of late. I was kept much occupied over the Labor Day weekend by the task of seeing Diana (Daniel's younger sister, for those keeping score at home) get married. It was fun! I like weddings, and Jewish weddings are my favorite kinds of weddings (because, really, all the fun of a regular wedding, plus breaking glasses, circle dancing, and Hebrew). And probably weddings in which my sister-in-law gets married are my most favorite of all, but we'll never know, because there aren't enough members in the set for good statistics.

Anyway, it was a great wedding. I hope to get a chance to write a little more about it.

This recent heat wave keeps knocking out our electricity. Daniel and I came home on Monday afternoon (after being over at the grandparent's house helping to clear up after the wedding, and getting our weight in leftover wedding food and drink bestowed upon us for our efforts) to find that we had no power. Power came back on at 7:30 p.m. or so, and stayed on until shortly after 10 p.m., when we had a brownout, which converted itself into a genuine blackout sometime in the middle of the night. It was incredibly hot. I managed to sleep eventually. I think Daniel stayed up most of the night reading by flashlight.

The power was on in the morning, and I went to work. Daniel phoned me just as I was wrapping up for the day and said, "Hey, everyone in San Jose just came home and turned on their air conditioners, and we have a brownout again." So I came home, and we went to California Pizza Kitchen and thence to Borders Books (where we ran into some friends). By the time we came home, we had power again, which meant that I could read a little of my newly-arrived belated birthday present from Daniel: Mary Gentle's 1610. I only managed to read about 50 pages before I really needed to go to bed, but my highly preliminary opinion is that this book rocks.

Anyway, I really should be getting off to work - talk to you again soon!
