Last month, someone stole a laptop computer from the graduate division of UC Berkeley. The laptop computer contained the names and social security numbers of a bunch of current and former UC Berkeley grad students. Possibly including mine.

I just received a letter today informing me that last week, my doctor's office was broken into and two computers were stolen that contained names, addresses, medical information, and social security numbers of patients, possibly including mine.

In both cases, police think that the thieves were probably after the computers, not the info on them. But, of course, we can't be sure. I'm taking appropriate measures to guard against identity theft.

But I'm really not feeling so great about the security of my personal data right now.
