Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm? Not me...

I just learned of the passing of Shirley Temple Black on Monday, 10 February 2014.

Awww... I'm sorry to hear that. It's the end of a legend. She was 85.

More about the life of Shirley Temple.

When I was a kid, I was known to my family and friends as "Becky." Not "Rebecca" but "Becky." Of course I knew my name was Rebecca but it was only used in a school situation when the teachers would always call me "Rebecca" and then would always say "Rebecca-of-Sunnybrook Farm?" - and I'd always just laugh and say "no."

I heard that so many times growing up it became nauseating to me. Later, after age 20 or so, my first husband decided he liked "Rebecca" rather than "Becky" so I reverted to the use of my real name from then on. I think my family and friends never really got used to that, but I've been "Rebecca" ever since then, except when I'm online where I'm known as "Bex" mainly for the convenience of it.

I also grew up watching the old Shirley Temple movies and I did love them. I was amazed at what that little girl could do on stage. What a talent! Now there are thousands of little girls who seem to have a lot of talent out there, all over the place. But Shirley Temple was it for my generation as well as those Little Rascals... remember them?

So I take my hat off (if I had a hat) to the passing of a wonderfully talented little girl. They don't really make 'em like Shirley Temple any more!

And thanks to my friend, Mz. Em, at Words of Mine, for letting us know this news. I've been otherwise detained here today in watching tennis and hadn't seen any newscasts at all.

Cheers,

Bex

It's in every one of us, by and bye.
