A Rare Tirade on Racism

I'm usually the last person to talk about race. I think Martin Luther King Jr. was flawless in his mindset, thinking there should be no judgement based on race, whether pro or against minorities. But the VTech shooting has brought things a bit closer than usual.

As much as I'm proud of my Korean heritage, I'm also equally proud of being a North Carolinean. I don't think of the "two halves" any different; they're both important and both make me who I am. Yet today, in school, I was looked at differently and noticed that myself and other Asian friends of mine were being stared at, and groups pushed by unusually quickly.

Why is it that judgement is passed based on heritage or race? Isn't it true that the vast majority of crimes and murders in the US are not committed by Asians? Why isn't race ever painted when a Caucasian person commits a crime?

The news has made a huge deal out of the race of the shooter. I think it was a deplorable act, the shootings, yet its no better to sit and focus on his race as a major part. Every time he is introduced, they begin with "South Korean Cho Seung-Hui" or "Cho Seung-Hui of South Korea" or they run a tirade about his status in America as a Legal Alien.

I'm tired of racism, passive and active. I'm tired of little undercut remarks towards my friends and my own heritage. I'm tired of Affirmative Action causing more problems than it solves.

People ask why minorities seem to congretate towards each other so much. I know that sometimes its just easier, to be with people who look at you for who you are, not for where your parents are from. We don't choose where we come from, only where we go.
