I took the People to Dog Store a few days ago. We bought a new chew toy for me. That makes eleven. And we bought food and stuff. Before I could get them out the door, the People hit the aisle with all the chokers. Useless items. The People seem to like them. I’ve had several in my short life. My current one is red leather. I like it well enough. For a choker. I prefer no choker at all. Most of us do. Well, Doberman and English Bulldog lean toward studs, but they’ve always been melodramatic. Poodle’s choker came with her. It did not snap together right, but the People never brought home a new one. That was one of the ways I knew Poodle would be moving on whenever new People decided to make her theirs. But that day in Dog Store, my People stopped among the chokers, and soon enough they had a new choker for Poodle. It is pink. It has white flowers. I want to bite them off. They also picked out a purple collar for me. Ho-hum. I deserve better. Ever since the People put the new pink choker with white flowers on Poodle, they coo over her. It makes her think she’s the favorite. Big fat lie. Anyone can see who they like best. I am going to bite those flowers off. When the People looked at the purple choker they brought home for me, they didn't like the way an edge had been cut. So I got nothing. Tonight I let Poodle eat with me from a plate of gravy and kibbles. As I chewed, I looked up close at her new pink choker with white flowers. It’s cute, all right, and it makes her cute, too. A little white sausage trimmed in pink. When we finish all the kibbles, Poodle turns and trots back to the den. I follow her. Bite her flowers. As long as I am around, Poodle will never be favorite. |
