I wanted to go. I always want to go. A ride-see shakes me up and gets me thinking. So when they say, “El? Wanna go?” and I see my auto seat in the auto waiting for me, I have no second thoughts. I have no thoughts at all except ride-see. Poodle and Labrador look over the balcony at us as we wheel out of my house. They will be asleep before we hit Pete’s.

This morning there is chicken in the napkin they bring me. Sometimes there is ham. Or a bit or two of egg. I like them all. Then we stop for gas, and I stand in my auto seat and sniff the fumes from my window. Then we’re off. I see the ocean on one side and hills on the other. The sun is warm on me. I doze. I wake. Still riding. I doze again. I wake. Still riding. I doze again. Do you get how this day is going?

We drive more. We finally stop in some other People’s town. I see a few dogs. Aussie winks a blue eye at me. I bark in return. Peke ignores me as she swishes her skirts in the crosswalk. I bark at her anyway. My People park in the shade and leave the windows cracked and the sun roof open. I doze. When they return, we drive until they find some grass for me. No park, just some grass along side a road. I pee out the water I drank before I left my house, but I don’t want any water they offer me now. I am ready to go find Poodle and Labrador.

We drive more. I doze. I can’t really fall fast asleep because I might miss something. I like hearing my People talk as we drive. Sometimes one of them will look back at me and say sweet things. But it’s days and days before they stop the auto again, and then they park behind a bush and leave me in my auto seat. This time I fall asleep until one of my People comes and walks me. A tied up Mutt barks at me rudely and jumps at me, just about choking himself, and I am so shocked that I take a few steps back. It’s a loud town. We walk past Robin’s, then the Brambles, then down another street and through another parking lot without seeing Mutt or any other canine. I am happy to get back in the car.

We drive more. This ride-see has turned into a snooze. Then I smell salt and fish and I sit up and sniff through the open window at the Pacific. The sound of all that rolling water puts me to sleep. We all take a walk down a little path to some benches, and my People look out at the sea while I sniff old dog smells around us.

We drive more. Into woods and hills and I see a flock of turkeys walking through a neighborhood and I must bark, bark, bark out my window, and suddenly there are deer, five of them, walking across a street and heading for a yard in the neighborhood and I think wow. I could live here.

We drive more. I have lost the will to live. I can feel my eyes roll back in my head. My tongue is probably hanging out as I doze, but I don’t care. I just want to stop the auto and sit by the side of the road.

It is past dark when we get back to my house. Poodle and Labrador sniff me all over. I grab my chew toy and QUANK it good. It’s my way of saying Too bad you missed all the fun.
