There’s always a lot going on in my house. It is, after all, an animal house. Tonight when the People come home, Cat has left them another Mouse in the hallway, one that Poodle hasn’t yet found. I can’t believe I didn’t know Cat was in the house until I saw him sitting beside Mouse. I was on the bed, zoned out under the fan. Hot today. My favorite.

Supper comes right after the People get home, so we’re always wound up. Cat sits on the counter expecting his fish food. Poodle dances in the kitchen and whimpers. I quank my chew toy. Labrador paces from slumber ball to kitchen to the stairs, where she awaits her supper. I remember when she hardly ate. These days, she is pretty good, but there are times when she’s slow about it, and then Poodle and me sneak up on her plate and gobble what we can before the People see us. We are little pigs, Poodle and me. Poodle more than me.

Lately, the People have caught on, and they separate us when they put our plates down. Poodle goes in the laundry room. I go upstairs and eat behind a closed door. Labrador’s plate is set on the chair by the breakfast bar so she can eat on her own without two little pigs horning in on her. But sometimes she doesn’t. Sometimes she just paces. And then the people usually feed her by hand. She eats pretty good that way. I know for a fact she has a soft mouth. If I’m around, I stand there, too, waiting for food to drop. A pea. A carrot. One of the meat chunks or some gravy. I am not particular. Sometimes I have gone for something that’s dropped on the floor, and I’ll feel a carrot fall on my head from above. I don’t know why Labrador can’t keep things in her mouth. Still, I like the leftovers. There are lots of ways to eat supper, but feeding Labrador by hand is best.
