This morning, I wake early. I am restless. I can’t get comfortable. I climb into my igloo and lick my lips and close my eyes. This is better. I drift. I feel a breeze. I burrow down deeper in my igloo and drift farther in. Sleep. Early morning sleep. I see Cat on his hill. I used to watch him from the lookout window where I can see everything. I see him now, sitting like a statue, and I wu-wuu-wuuu to him. His ear twists toward me. I woof. His ear flickers, and he turns his head away like he doesn’t hear me. That is it. I race out of my house and whip up the hill, calling Cat’s name, but by the time I hit the path, there is no Cat, only a shadow slinking away into the underbrush. I do not follow. |
