another guidelines reminder!

HeavyGlow

I just spent the morning sending out emails to many of our contributors for the upcoming issue asking them to reformat their pieces and resend them.

Below is a copy of our submission guidelines. Please, please take a look at them and try to remember to remain in compliance. This will be the last time we're able to contact the writers and ask them to reformat/resend. We receive so many submissions each quarter that it's nearly impossible to conduct business in this manner. Starting with the next issue, we will automatically reject any piece via form-mail that is noncompliant.

Please remember that the guidelines below are in place for all submissions, including special features.

GENERAL GUIDELINES:

Please use our submission form for fiction and special features. If the form does not work for you, then send a query for further instruction to ohare.taylor.publications@gmail.com. We would like to receive our fiction submissions strictly via the online form from now on. The same general guidelines listed below must still be followed along with the form guidelines located here. If there is a problem using the submission form, please let us know.

As of November 15th, 2005, we are reading submissions for our spring issue: March 15th, 2006.

Please subscribe to our HeavyGlow blog in order to receive instant notification of important announcements, updates, calls for submissions, and news about HeavyGlow. Click here to read and subscribe!

HeavyGlow: a journal of flash fiction, is seeking the following kinds of original works of art that are dark and emotional in nature: fiction and photography. We enjoy eclectic and creative work that taps into the rich vein of human emotion be it sorrow, joy, pain, love, etc. In short, we're great admirers of effective experimental and unusual form. Humorous work is fine--even wanted--but we do prefer black humor over feelgood humor and we believe that humor will be a harder sell.

Ignore the following guidelines at your own risk! Noncompliant submissions will be deleted without notification. Please note that we do not accept poetry.

Original Fiction:

We want work of no more than 750 words, with a very strong preference for less than 500 words. We want true flash. No exceptions will be made. We're interested in dark literary fiction that engages the senses and evokes emotional reaction, but will consider any genre, including romance and erotica, as long as it adheres to the dark principle and is well written.

Original Photography:

Because of the nature of our publication and our name, we have a strong interest in photography and art that has a glowing element to either accompany our fiction selections, or to showcase on separate, dedicated pages. Think in terms of light and shadow, abstract and surreal, human bodies with luminescent skin, sunrises, sunsets, startling images, highly contrasted images, etc. That said, we will look at and consider any kind of photography so feel free to give us a try or send a query for more information.

Update 7/18/05: Please follow the link below and take a look at the photography on display for a good idea of the kind of submissions we'd like to see. The reading here is nice, too. Lily: A Monthly Online Literary Review.

HeavyGlow no longer accepts art submissions; however, our sister publication, Chick Flicks Ezine does. The only time HeavyGlow will consider art is if it is a graphic art flash fiction piece (see our September, 2005 issue for example)

Special Features:

Visit this page for full details about our special features. Please comply with our regular guidelines when submitting for this area of the publication.

How to Submit:

Submissions are currently open year round; we prefer use of our online submission form for fiction and special features. Publishing schedule as follows:

Spring: March 15
Summer: June 15
Fall: September 15
Winter: December 15

We will have each issue filled by the fifteenth of the month prior to publication. For instance, we'll have made our selections for the December 15th issue by November 15th. Any submissions received after November 15th will be considered for the Spring issue of March 15th. And so on and so on ad infinitum.

At this time, we will consider previously published work, but strongly prefer unpublished original fiction, photography, and art. If your work has already been published, please provide the publication name and URL (if applicable) when submitting. Send no more than three pieces of flash, attached to a single email. For photography, attach three samples to a single email and then wait for further correspondence. We will reply within 48 hours either requesting additional photography for further consideration, or notifying you that we are not interested at this time.

Format:

Please single space your work, but double space between paragraphs. No indents or tabs.

Use the following instructions ONLY if you cannot use the submission form. Attach your flash fiction (no more than three pieces) as a .doc file or an .rtf file and mail to ohare.taylor.publications@gmail.com. ATTENTION--please do not send your work pasted into the body of an email. If you paste your work into an email, it will be deleted without notification.

Attach your photography samples (no more than three unless notified otherwise) as jpegs of approximately 800 pixels in width. Be aware that your work will be sized down for a proper fit in our publication.

The subject line of your submission email must include the following: "HeavyGlow [fiction, special feature, or photography] Submission: title[s]". The body of your submission email must include the following: a brief cover letter, your name, your email address, and a one hundred word bio written in the third person. We prefer that your art or photography be titled.

NOTE: PLEASE MAKE CERTAIN THAT YOUR WORK IS FINISHED AND COMPLETE ACCORDING TO YOUR PERCEPTION. ONCE YOU RECEIVE YOUR PROOF PAGE, IF ACCEPTED, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ACCOMODATE FURTHER REVISIONS ASIDE FROM SPELLING ERRORS AND INCORRECT BIO INFORMATION. THIS IS FINAL!

HeavyGlow is not a paying market at this time. We are a fledgling journal of art and are unable to provide anything other than exposure and networking possibilities.

SUBMISSION FORM GUIDELINES:

In addition to the guidelines above, please don't include your name or any personal information in the story box (body field). Also, paste only the story text in the "body" field. Do not include title, bio, word count, name, email address, or anything aside from the word [end].

Because these guidelines have become lengthy and somewhat unwieldy, we will attempt to shorten the guidelines with concise language in order to clarify exactly what is important regarding your submissions. Look for these changes when the new issue is released on March 15th, 2006.

Thanks very much for your assistance!
