for two things.

One is a request for suggestions. Audible.com is offering a free audiobook and I would like to try listening to a book to see if it's something I'm going to want to do down the line (figuring that holding books is sometimes an issue. Right now i don't have the concentration but I'd like a taste.) SUGGESTIONS? Is there a book you know of that REALLY WORKS on audio? I have one or two ideas - Kate Derie says that Pratchett works really well and I'm thinking that even though I have all of his stuff, as well as that of Christopher Moore, that funny might work.) But someone who really comes across well? I went to the website and was just SO overwhelmed....

Second - I don't KNOW if it would be overdoing it to light a candle tonight but tonight is the Edgar Award banquet. I've championed good books/good writers/friends over the years and yes, i've thrown hissy fits when they didn't win. Worse when they were not nominated (I still don't comprehend ignoring SJ's ABSENT FRIENDS and never will. I know it wasn't an easy book to read but well, I guess i thought it was fantastic.)

Anyway, if I DO light a candle, hoping I can find a scented one around here because the only other ones are yahrzeit and that's just NOT RIGHT, it's because I want SO DAMN MUCH for Cornelia's A FIELD OF DARKNESS to get the Edgar for Best First Novel. I just DO. The thing is TONIGHT in just a few hours. Damn. If you're there, i want to hear about the symposium stuff because the panels look WONDERFUL. And if I may say so meself, I know good panel when I see it.

It would make me VERY happy to see Nancy Pickard get the Edgar for VIRGIN OF SMALL PLAINS a book I thought just wonderful and superior, though I can't compare it as i haven't read all the other nominees. I wouldnt mind seeing Naomi Hirahara walk away with one for SNAKESKIN SHAMISEN. Three of the four short story writers are friends of mine and talented as HELL but when it comes to best first, I don't CARE about being fair. I want it to go to Cornelia. Not just because I love her but because that book was phenomenal and wonderful and striking and unique and goddamn good.

Okay so maybe i'll go BUY a friggin' scented candle. There's time, right? What scent do we think the gods like? Not vanilla please - I think they've OD'd on vanilla.

Meanwhile it's time to get out the little Happy Hamster Dance (or the little Hedgehog Dance) just to remember how fantastic an Edgar nomination is but still, I WANT her to win.
