This was one of the be3st i've attended and I hope if you know me you know that my claim has NOTHING to do with my involvement in it. but oh wow. Nice one.
So i asked on Facebook what to say when you're beyond "toast" and/or "fried" when you're tired. I am SO fricasseed right now. The laryngitis is in full force and we slept, but...
so a quick beginning highlight real.
Best times in random order:
Dinner with the amazing Sally Powers (my editor for years now at I Love A Mystery) (see the website link above) with fellow review and Bcon Fan Guest of Honor Maddy van Hertbubble (she's always let me do that - it's van Hertbruggen) and her terrific husband Jean, Stu and me at 1 market. We were there for over 4 hours and I never noticed.
The panel I was on with Sarah, Janet, and Chris - GREAT moderating by the oh so cool ali Karim (who happens now to owe me a big favor. mwahahahahahahahaha! guilt favors!) We al did not want to end it, audience was so good, the room (I try not to look but I do) was FULL, and we ALL have new book titles. And isn't THAT was this convention is for?
As the Anthony Awards "vanna", I got ot hand the awards to the winners. Kewllll, huh? Bestest was that I was pretty sure that one of two books would win and both are by friends. So being able to hand Louise Penny her Anthony for Best Novel was SO great! (and I hope you all understand when I say, with all the cornball I know is there, that I wish there had been a tie because SJ's THE SHANGHAI MOON (which Louise said right there she had voted for) was the other possible on the list. And no, I HAD NO IDEA who won. I was even handed unsealed envelopes in case I wanted to know as "chair" of that committee. It never occurred to me to look. Oh and Mr. Lee Child? Your comments at the banquet were just wonderful. Just right. And just Lee.
And then the endless great conversations on or off the topic of mystery but of creativity and life, and the universe and writing and technology and food and books...with Kate and Michael, Jane, Shira, Marcia, Chris, Scott, Bill, and all of the above ILAM folk. maybe I need to think about wearing a body mike so I can capture those conversations.
This is why I go. Not to be hoarse, crozzled (another new one) and trying to read signs that say "push" when i'm pulling (that's the sort of challenge my brain has right now) but to see this particular family of mine, sharing the pleasures of being with like people and hanging out.
more late.
