Random Rant # 2 - Moutain Dew

Okay, someone really must explain to me what the hell Mountain Dew's marketing strategy is, 'cuz I don't get it.

They've got 3 limited-run sodas out there in addition to their citrus? regular flavor and Code Red (Which, in case you wondered, tastes almost exactly like a Jolly Rancher soda. Try it, tell me I'm wrong.). I've tried two of the three: Live Wire, an orange soda which they refuse to sell except during the summer, and Pitch Black, a grape flavor which I'm guessing will vanish after Halloween. They're both better than MD's regular sodas, and as near as I can tell they sell better as well. So why does the company not sell these except for limited runs? Perhaps they really expect more people to be interested in Caffeine Free Diet Mountain Dew (yes, there is such a thing, ghastly thought though it may be), but I disagree JUST a little bit.

The third, I don't know if it's for a limited amount of time, but it's only available... at Taco Bell. I kid you not; it's a lime flavored MD they call Baja Blast. Apparently the MD company feels that people won't drink it unless they're in the mood for bad-imitation-mexican fast food. Why they feel this way, I have NO idea.

Now, you might be wondering why I care at all - fair enough. Here's my reason: I can't stand coffee, but I LIKE CAFFEINE. It's my friend. It's nice. Keeps me awake AND stops headaches. And as far as I know, there are limited options to get caffeine from a non-cola soda. There's Jolt, which is hard to find. 7Up puts out a caffeinated version they called dnL (7up upside down - ain't they just so cute?), also not easy to find, and not an appetizing choice unless you're already hooked on 7Up. Far as I know, that leaves only one line of sodas... you guessed it, Mountain Dew.

So now that ya know, someone please tell me why it seems like the company doesn't want to make money? They put out Diet Dew, Diet Code Red, and Caffeine Free Diet Dew all year long - which makes no sense because Dew targets the sugar-and-caffeine crowd - and they sideline other, better selling flavors.

It's enough to give me a headache... well, it would. Except I have a nice, hot cup of tea. Lots of caffeine, and I can add sugar 'til it crunches.
