In "What is an American," de Crevecoeur argues:

He is an American who, leaving behind him all his ancient prejudices and manners, receives new ones from the new mode of life he has embraced, the new government he obeys, and the new rank he holds...Here individuals of all nations are melted into a new race of men...(3)

Write a two-three paragraph response in which you defend (agree with), challenge (disagree with) or qualify (agree with some aspects, but not all) the views de Crevecoeur expresses in the above passage. For our purposes, assume that de Crevecoeur means "people," (both women and men) when he writes "men."

IMPORTANT GUIDELINES:
1) Do not spend time re-stating what is stated in the passage. Jump right into your opinion on this issue.

2) Using personal pronouns such as "I" and "my" is acceptable for this post. However, slang, sloppy grammar, and skimpy or non-existent evidence will hurt your grade.

3) In order to earn a 9 or 10 for this post, you must support your position with evidence from at least two texts we have read this semester. You can cite de Crevecoeur, but you must also have evidence from at least one of the following: Mukherjee's "American Dreamer," Hughes' "Let America be America Again," or Rodriguez's Hunger of Memory. They are all available in the Class Materials section of my website.

4) Using evidence as support means quoting directly or paraphrasing and explaining how the quotes/paraphrases support your argument.
