We have geese here year round. Some geese come from the north in the winter. I don't know if it's like the northerners that we call "half-backs" (Half-backs leave the snowy north, move to florida, but decide they don't like it down there, so they move "half-back" and wind up here in north carolina.) or what. in the winter, we see (and hear) flocks of them always flying overhead and they seem pretty scarce at the lake. but this time of year, we have gaggles of them, in every corner of our metropolis.

when we first moved here, i took c to a doctor's appointment. in the parking lot, on one of the small grassy areas between spaces, sat a mother goose. the office had been kind enough to make a sign to post next to her that read, "don't disturb the nesting geese"

it's nothing for whole gaggles of them to waddle across streets, in a straight, perfect line. traffic stops for them and we all wait for them to cross. even on the busiest streets.

it used to be that every morning, they would cross from the liquor store/restaurant parking lot back to the lake at the entrance of our community. every morning, same time and like clock work, i'd have to wait (along with other drivers)for them to cross the road and work their way down to the lake.

if you're "lucky" (not sure exactly how lucky it is) to get one of the apartments just feet from the lake, you can feed them from your patio/balcony.

yesterday as mark and i were coming home, two geese and their little baby were crossing the road and so traffic was once again stopped. i'm going to try and hunt the little family up in the next few days to snap some shots. i admit, that the whole time i've lived here, i've never seen such a young baby. he was so tiny he still had fuzz instead of feathers. while his parents were walking at their usual leisurely pace, the little guy was waddling as fast as he could just to keep up.

in the meantime, enjoy the two geese who have a fondness for fastfood. in a one block area, within walking distance of our home, we have about eleven restaurants, both fastfood and dine-in. no wonder they make their home here. a nice little lake (pond) to float in and all the left-over food they can eat.

by the way, when geese fly in their v formation, why is one side longer than the other?

answer: because it has more geese.
