Something nice, for a change

i've been quite the hermit lately. haven't even gone to the beach in a week and a half (sinful, i know) but i'm hoping to dig out my colored pencils and with them and my new (fresh, clean) sketch pad head down there tomorrow and do some drawing. i'm feeling the need for some art therapy.

anyhow, that's not what this is about...i have been a hermit and as such, watching lots of tv on the computer (as i don't have cable) for those who haven't heard about it, hulu.com has some really good programming, a few documentaries worth watching and several episodes of 30 days, the show where either morgan himself, or just an average joe spends 30 days living in the shoes of someone else. the immigration and outsourcing ones were pretty good (as is the muslim one, which i had seen before)

however, around my internet tv watching travels, i stumbled upon a show on fox. (i hate "fair and balanced fox news" so it irritates me that they have so many good programs i like to watch...arghhhh!)

i had remembered seeing this series advertised a while ago, but since i hadn't spent much time at all (if any) watching tv, i had forgotten about it and really didn't remember what station it was on.

the show is called Secret Millionare. the premise is a multi-millionare goes off to live as others do in some of the worst neighborhoods in the country. they have to leave behind all their belongings and must live on a welfare wage for one week. in many cases they have to get jobs and they live in less than nice conditions.

while there for that week, they must find at least one person who's struggling and/or selflessly does good for others, confess they've been lying to them about who they really are, and give them at least $100,000 of their own money.

it's fascinating, emotional and really inspirational to see not only the journey the millionares go on during the week, but to see so many people giving to others when they themselves have very little.

so if you need a little uplifting or a renewal of faith in humanity and the kindness of others, check the show out. but i warn you, keep lots of hankies nearby, you'll need them.
