(Dad here)

Last Saturday I took LB and his bicycle out beyond the end of the block for the first time. He's been doing decently on riding around the driveway and on our street and has shown a lot more interest in the bicycle lately, so I tossed the bike in the trunk and headed out for an empty parking lot where he'd have room to roam.

He said he wanted to go to the parking lot across the channel from Verdugo Park, so he could cross the bridge. Given that this lot is used mainly by students at GCC, it was pretty much deserted on a Saturday, so it worked for me.

As soon as he was on the bike, he headed for the bridge across to Verdugo park and rode around there for a while. Then back across to the parking lot, around, back across the bridge to do a larger loop in the park, then back to the lot. Then he decides it's time to cross the bridge.

He never meant the little bridge to Verdugo Park, but the big bridge to GCC. He's not strong enough to get up the ramp to the bridge and needed a push up that, but once up there, he went across and explored about half the campus.

When it was getting to be time to go, he rode back across to the lot (needed help staying under control coming back down the ramp) then across and did the biggest loop yet in the park before we went.

I'd estimate he rode about a mile, maybe more in total. Not bad for a kid who'd never ridden past the end of the block. (Though he's ridden pretty good distance on his tricycle).

This weekend he wants to take another stab at not using the training wheels.
