A party of scientists

On Friday night, I went to a housewarming party at my sister's new neighbors' house. They just moved here from L.A. -- they both teach up at UCSC. She's a seismologist/vulcanologist; he's a planetary scientist/astronomer. They fight crime! It was a fun party, but I felt intimidated fairly frequently by the high-power science talk happening. The guests were all people from UCSC's graduate Earth Sciences department, and their significant others. And one little houseful of neighbors (us). But it was fun. I did talk to a couple of very nice, extremely scientific, fairly cute young guys. I don't think there's any future there, but it was fun to chat. My sister made friends with a very intense, intelligent and wacky woman named Bathsheba, who designs sculptures that are created by literally printing metal. They're super cool. She brought a couple in her pocket to show at the party. If I could afford one, I'd buy one from her, 'cause they're that cool.

I think the main thing that was nice was just going to a party with interesting people. As I said, most of them were speaking a language I couldn't understand, but they were all very friendly. And I made a couple of connections. I met the dean of graduate students from UCSC. If they had a department I wanted to go into for grad school, that would probably be more helpful, but they don't have a Child or Human Development program. The closest is Education or Psychology, and neither of those is the direction I want to go. However, she is going to try to hook me up with somebody who can arrange for my students to come and visit, and do some stuff there, so that they can see what university life is like. So that's good.

In completely other news, today I'm going to try to make lemon marmalade with some portion of the gajillion pounds of lemons I picked from Kam's tree. My sister has an incredibly labor-intensive but delicious recipe we're going to use. Go figure. My sister has this funny recipe dichotomy. If a recipe is very simple and straightforward, she'll complicate the hell out of it to try to improve it, but if it starts out really complicated, she'll modify it greatly in the simplifying direction. Anyway, we'll see how it goes.
