I'm flying to Portland this afternoon to visit my brother and his girlfriend and their new house with fruit trees in the back yard, and especially their new puppy Simon. He's a golden lab. He's about 7 months old. He likes to eat socks. Puppy!!!!

I'm really happy for them that they love this house and that they have an adorable puppy to devote a lot of attention to. Losing the baby in August was just devestating, I know, and it's not that I think they'll ever really get over it, but I think it's really good that they have some positive things to focus on. Somewhere for all that love and energy to go. I haven't seen them since before they lost the baby, so this is going to be a particularly meaningful trip for me, too. I did a lot of grieving, myself, and I talked to them both a lot about their grieving process, but I haven't had the chance to just give them each a really long hug yet. That will be good.

In other news, my new assistant started in my classroom this past Monday, which has been a godsend. I mean, I was doing okay on my own, but I was stretched pretty thin, and wasn't able to keep up with all the correcting and the planning without spending long hours after school working on it. It's been wonderful to have a smart, capable, interesting person who knows a lot about the stuff I don't know a lot about, but who isn't arrogant about it, and who is willing to take direction too. Having a reliable adult in my classroom with me! What an unusual circumstance! Well, that's not entirely true. Before I taught Junior High, I almost always had a reliable adult in the classroom with me. But for the last three years it's been just me (well, and then there was that whole two years of the private aide to one of my students, who drove me completely insane). Hallelujah for smart and capable!

Still not ready to talk about the new aspects of my private life here in a public forum, but I will say that my personal life is going fabulously, and I'm having a great time.
