The taste of human flesh

Yeah, I need to finish that damn story already. It's leaving a bad taste in my mouth. (bah-bum-boom!) I've been at it so long I'm trying to edit the thing before I get the scene written, which may explain why the scene hasn't gotten written yet. If I can't complete a short story in a week, there's something wrong here.

What is scary, anyway? I've managed disturbing and gross, but scary is something else. I can't think of anything I've read that's scared me, either. So far I've just been messing around with those primal fears, like pain, being hunted, etc. IRL, the scariest things people deal with tend to fall under the category of 'change'. In a story, 'change' means, "the mighty hero is off on an adventure." Yeah, well, him and the horse he rode in on are lunchmeat, as far as I'm concerned. Fear is small, personal, like the feeling of a cockroach running over your face at 3 a.m. I'm still working on it.

Recommend: "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat", Oliver Sacks
