Squeezing worlds

There is definitely a trick to squeezing a world into the background of a short story. Someday, I hope to master it. It seems to work best when the char is navigating the weirdness of said world, thus bringing it to the forefront, but when you've got two or three layers of internal character stuff that's the main point of the story, where does the world go? So, I'm trying to squeeze a world into the background. Along with the fact that the chars are vampires. *sigh*

It probably says something about me that my monsters are nicer than my people...the most hair-raising story I've written doens't have a single werewolf. (It's also gotten through stage 2 at NFG. Yaaay!) But I think that monsters are monstrous by nature and that people have more of a choice. When they chose to act like monsters, that's scary.

On a less philosophical note, we went to Chapel Hill yesterday and bought books and had sushi. A very nice day was had. And they marked down the first edition T.S. Eliot! Hooray! OK, right, yes, I know it's just a pamphlet of a paper that he presented at a college, but it's still a first edition from the right era with those 50's graphics and everything. You go find a first edition anything of Eliot's for $16. First edition of a compilation of his works published in the 80's or whatever doesn't count. Nyah. :)
