Apparently my mother, the packrat, who somehow manages to be a packrat even after having to get rid of most of her stuff and move, sent me a box. Contents: pretty butterfly earrings, cute gecko earrings that are identical to the ones she sent me 2 years ago (I guess she got that I like them), hummingbird feeder, deformed stuffed gecko keychain (the Geico gecko), a super-cool lapdesk with light and clock and place to stash stuf, and my high school graduation gown. From 1991. It was, and still is, this flimsy nylon stuff that would probably burst into flames if you smoked near it. From 1991. Sentimental value? Zip. Reasons for keeping it for over a decade? Nada. Reason she sent it to me? No freaking clue.

And did I mention that it was over a decade old?

On the up side, the lap desk makes me feel totally prepared for the next power outage. Onboard light, woo! The Geico gecko is still downstairs...it's kind of disturbing. Like a mutant Godzilla. Stalking around on its hind feet on those twisted legs, staring at everything with those huge baby-alien eyes, and generally looking like a uromastyx head got stuck on it by accident. I showed to our live gecko and he looked as freaked out about it as I felt. Ok, he freaks out about everything. But this was different, I'm sure of it.

Why do you keep muttering, "yeah, right" under your breath?
