The Lunatic Cafe
Book Four of the Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter Series
Laurell K. Hamilton

You get two preternatural experts in one with Anita Blake, animator and vampire slayer. She's one of the good guys in a world full of bad things. Now, Anita has fallen for the leader of a local pack of werewolves. She's survived a lot, but this love thing may kill her yet.

It's sad to say, but even while this book is still decent, I do believe that this is where the decline of the series begins. I had heard rumors that these novels slowly turn away from the supernatural mystery/thriller genre and head more into a supernatural romance novel. Here is where this begins to happen.

The real plot of the novel is a good one. Lycanthropes are disappearing, and Anita need to find out why. Are they alive? Are they dead? When a Naga is found skinned alive, Anita begins to believe a witch is involved, but nothing is ever as simple and straightforward as one bad guy being the cause of it all.

Unfortunately, the plot is overshadowed by Anita's feelings both for Richard the werewolf and Jean-Claude the vampire. The fight for her between two supernatural creatures seems to overshadow the plot to an annoying degree. I don't care about which supernatural creature has the hots for Anita, I read these books for the mystery/thriller aspect and while that was still present, it seemed to take a back seat to the romance.

The whole caught between two powerful men (alpha werewolf and master of the city vampire) seems to me less of a plot device and more of the author's personal fantasies coming to life in her novel.

I do hope that this series doesn't keep slipping into the supernatural romance direction. The first three books were so good, Anita's love life is not needed to make them better. In fact, it only makes it worse. It's obvious from the first three books that this series has tons of potential. It's also obvious from this novel that it's no longer living up to that potential. Still, I do plan on reading the entire series.

My rating: Three out of five snails.
