The Hunger Games
Directed by: Gary Ross

In a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided between 12 districts and the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16 year old Katniss's young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

When viewing a film based upon a novel, it is for the best if one regards the novel and the film as two separate entities. There is no way the film can ever be just like the novel, changes must be made. Think of it this way, when you read a book, do you do so in an hour and a half? The movie needs to fit into that time frame. That being said, when taken apart from the book I greatly enjoyed this film.

Yes, a lot was cut out of the book and it probably would have been better to have made the movie another half hour long and not exclude as much. Yes, things were changed (sometimes seemingly for no reason). But in the end, when taking the movie for what it is, I rather liked it. The book is better, but the movie is worth watching whether or not you have read the novel.

In fact, in this case, I'd almost recommend you see the movie and then read the novel. That way you'll get the extras after seeing the basic story.

I was concerned that the pseudo-relationship between Katniss and Peeta would be more of a focus in the film than it was in the book, but this was not the case. They kept true to Peeta being in love with Katniss and Katniss merely pretending to love him back so that they could both leave the Games alive.

All in all, this is a very good movie. Yes, there were things that bothered me, but those things were all in comparison to the novel.

My rating: Four out of five snails.
