Blue Moon
Laurell K. Hamilton
Book eight, Anita Blake Vampire Hunter series

Danger makes the world go 'round, just ask Anita Blake, vampire hunter. Right now, her problems lie with her ex-fiance - a werewolf who just got arrested on an assault charge. His guilt or innocence is not the issue. The fact that there's a full moon on the rise is.

Once again, the miniscule description of an Anita Blake novel is not entirely true. This is such a minor part of the plot, that the fact that it's the jacket description is just plain wrong. Within the first few chapters, Richard, the werewolf, is out of jail on bail thanks to Anita. Also, he wasn't in there on assault charges, he was in there on fake rape charges for angering the wrong bad guy.

This series used to be really good and if they stuck to the underlying plot of the villain wanting to kill a tribe of trolls (and Anita and her friends) to find a mystical artifact which he believes is buried there, it might still be a good read. But instead, this isn't much more than soft core porn.

Anita cheats on her vampire boyfriend with Richard and then drives his werewolf pack into sexual frenzy so that all are trying to hunt her down and have sex with her. Not to mention the other two vampires (neither of which is her current boyfriend) that want her as well. And yet, somehow, the writer thinks this character is pure. No, not even close.

These books are really no longer suitable for the target audience and are more suitable for adults because of the sexual situations. To be honest, if I wasn't determined to read the entire series, I'd have been done with this a few books ago.

It gets really old when every man in the book wants Anita and when she's the only one who can save the day and is always so powerful that she can do anything. It makes you want to roll your eyes and wonder if this character is the author's power trip fantasy.

Unless you're reading the whole series like I am, I do not recommend this book.

My rating: Two out of five snails.
