Stephen King "Riding the Bullet", published here on paper for the first time, is the story of Alan Parker, who's hitchhiking to see his dying mother but takes the wrong ride, farther than he ever intended. In "Lunch at the Gotham Cafe", a sparring couple's contentious lunch turns very, very bloody when the maitre d' gets out of sorts. "1408", the audio story in print for the first time, is about a successful writer whose specialty is "Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Graveyards" or "Ten Nights in Ten Haunted Houses", and though room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel doesn't kill him, he won't be writing about ghosts anymore. And in "That Feeling You Can Only Say What It Is in French", terror is deja vu at 16,000 feet. This is a collection of short stories by Stephen King, and while some are better than others, all of them are worth reading. There wasn't a single one that disappointed me in the bunch. My personal favorites are "1408", which is super creepy and not at all like the movie and The Road Virus Heads North, which is probably one of the creepiest things I have ever read in my life. My least favorite of the bunch is "Luckey Quarter" because it really didn't seem much like the work of King at all, however, even that is worth a read. I'd love to see some of these shorts expanded into full length novels, though even as shorts they are all engaging on their own. One of the great things about this book is that you can put it down between stories. Since it's a volume of multiple stories, you're not left staying up way too late trying to finish the novel. I would recommend this book to anyone. My rating: Five out of five snails. Read/Post Comments (0) Previous Entry :: Next Entry Back to Top |
